If you have attended an American Canyon High School theatre production within the last year, you may have noticed two students selling flowers for your favorite performers. These two students are Quinlan Hughes and Erica Bonalba. Both are members of our very own drama program here at ACHS and are active within the school community. People buy flowers to give to their family members and friends to celebrate their performances. Whether it be for choir, band, or theatre, flowers have been a staple in congratulations worldwide. In their own, unique way, Quinlan and Erica are bringing that experience straight to the ACHS Theatre. “I saw that there were a bunch of people coming in here with flowers. Why buy them at the store when you can help sponsor the school?” Quinlan explained. Speaking of sponsoring, all of the funds gathered from the cart will be going toward a great cause. The two will be attending an educational (and theatrical) trip to New York and the flower cart is their unique, eco-friendly way of collecting money for the trip.
With such an extensive amount of detail put into the cart, you would think that the two had outside help in the creation of their prototype. Nope! Outside of his mother, Quinlan was able to makeshift the cart entirely on his own. At first, it looked “woody and gross. [Mom] painted it, and it looked really beautiful after that”. Quinlan took inspiration from different flower stores in the area, specifically with the “two-section opening” such as some of the prominent flower stores. Speaking of the flowers, the flower cart features a variety of beautiful greenery at its disposal. Before each show, Quinlan and Erica go to Costco to pick out the flowers. The green filler is selected at Trader Joe's or locally in their own neighborhood!
Since the new year is upon us, expect to see more from American Canyon High’s most fine set of florists! They will have their flower carts set up all throughout the year, most notably at the Winter One Acts which will be premiering in the final week of January! From Valentines Day to Promposals, Quinlan and Erica both have much in store and are ready to make their mark on the school and the performing arts programs in their own, unique way!
