November 8th marked the day of the Beaver Blood Moon. The next Blood Moon will occur in March 2025, so if you missed this one, it sucks to be you! A blood moon, also known as a Lunar eclipse, is when the sun, moon, and earth align. The moon is engulfed by the earth’s shadow and red light passes through the earth to illuminate on the moon. This creates a red moon effect, which is why people call it a “Blood Moon”.
Astronomy lovers all over the world had a better oppurtunity to see the Beaver Blood Moon in it’s full eclipse. However, in the Bay Area, the inconvenient time frame of 2 to 3 AM, and the disruptive rainfall made the lunar eclipse almost impossible to see. It is very unfortunate that the 707 area could not experience the beautiful lunar eclipse firsthand. For those who woke up in the late hours of the night, all they would’ve seen were clouds covering the sky, showing not a single glimpse of the moon. These conditions on such a rare and special night was devastating for the Bay Area.
Other places in the world had better opportunities than us here in American Canyon. They had clearer skies, and their time zone allowed for a more convenient time to watch the eclipse. Other people experienced the eclipse when they woke up or before they were going to sleep. The Beaver Blood Moon looked magnificent from their perspective and it came conveniently for many people around the world.
The Phillipines had arguably one of the best views of the Beaver Blood Moon. There were clear skies and they experienced the full eclipse from 6PM to 7PM. They were in a more fortunate situation than the residents here in the 707 area. In the Phillipines, the beautiful sunset and the bright red moon happened at the same time. From rural to metropolitan areas, the moon looked bright and beautiful. There were minimal to no interruptions during their Lunar Eclipse in the Philippines, providing the ideal experience that the Bay Area was deprived of.
Although the lunar eclipse is a beautiful phenomenon, not everyone views it that way. Many cultures in the world believe that a lunar eclipse brings bad omen to their wellbeing. Religions such as Chrisitianity and Hinduism believe that the blood moon is a sign that bad things will happen. The remarkable event has been expected to bring change, either positive or negative.
The photo shown to the left has an unfortunate story behind it. A photographer named Lance Pahang from Cebu City, Philippines experienced a heartbreak on the week of the Beaver Blood Moon. He is a young male in the Philippines who does photography as a hobby and has taken hundreds of photos that can be found on his social medias (@lancepahang). Lance stated “I planned to take the person I was dating to watch the lunar eclipse with me, but sadly we ended a few days before I could ask her. It was heartbreaking and I was feeling extremely down to the point where I just wanted to stay at home, but I decided to still come here anyway. The universe delivered despite the cloudy skies. Met a new friend too.” Lance captured a beautiful picture that deserves to be seen by more people. Even with the bad luck he experienced, he still took the time to see how this beautiful moon presented itself in the nice clear skies of the Philippines.
The Beaver Blood Moon was a different experience for everyone around the world, whether lucky or unfortunate. However, it is a common occurrence for us to view the same event through a different perspective. It can be ugly or beautiful, depending on the way you look at your own situation. This lunar eclipse is an example of how people may view the same occurrence through a differnet lens. All of the photos shown in the article share a different story, demonstrating the beauty and varied perspective behind the natural phenomena.
